About department

Department of Biology is one of the oldest theoretical departments at Masaryk University. It was established in 1919. The first chair of the Department Edward Babák is an author of the General Biology teaching concept for all medical faculties. Currently, the Department provides both theoretical and practical education of Medical Biology for Czech and International students. As a centre of excellent international biomedical research it also coordinates a PhD school in Biomedical Sciences.

The Annual PhD Conference in Biomedical Sciences 2026 is approaching

The Annual PhD Conference in Biomedical Sciences is just around the corner! From 20-21 October, more than 50 PhD students from the Faculty of Medicine MU, CEITEC MU and FNUSA-ICRC will come together at the Masaryk University campus to share their research, exchange ideas and connect with fellow researchers from across the field of biomedicine.

Scientists have discovered new links in the regulation of melanoma growth

An interdisciplinary team of researchers led by Stjepan Uldrijan from the Department of Biology and his PhD student Natálie Vadovičová, in collaboration with CEITEC MU, the Institute of Biophysics of the Czech Academy of Sciences, and FNUSA-ICRC, has published new findings on the molecular mechanisms that regulate the growth of malignant melanoma cells.

A young researcher is investigating how human cells copy their DNA and why this process fails in disease

A new international research project, ReG4CoRe – From Licensing to Firing: How RECQ4-G4 Condensates Control Replication in Human Cells, has recently been launched at our faculty. Supported by the prestigious Marie Skłodowska-Curie Postdoctoral Fellowships programme under Horizon Europe, the project has brought researcher Debopriya Bose to the research group of Lumír Krejčí at the Department of Biology.
